Caught in the rain???

Even though we all desperately seek sunshine, usually characteristic of Summer, mother nature can’t resist surprising us with wet, windy factors that are not as favorable as we would like for our hair. So for this one, I have looked into hair styles, products and quickie tips to still look fabulous if you are ever…caught in the rain. After arriving at the salon one time looking like a sad wet puppy dog (and having spent quite some time that morning styling my hair) it occurred to me that there must be ways to avoid the drippy mess that was now my hairstyle… Or at least a few ways and helpers to fix the crisis. So after discussing it with our team of stars, this is what we came up with:

If you have long hair like moi, I am happy to inform that there are ways to achieve great looking styles in a few minutes, and they will actually work towards making your hair look all pretty after it’s dry.

A simple side braid is always chic and one of the easiest ways to avert a rainy catastrophe. Always carry a comb with you and some elastic bands. After you stress over the unexpected weather conditions, comb your now wet hair until untangled. Part your hair on the side of your preference and do a low side ponytail. Start braiding your hair tightly until the farthest point you can and secure with another band.

If you have bangs you can comb them creating a wavy look and pin them under your ear. The beauty of it? Looks great while braided and after it’s almost dry if you want to, you can take off the braid and you will end up with great natural waves.

Another fantastic way to changing your look in this type of situation is creating a messy ponytail style.You can section you hair leaving the sides and front of your hairline undone and pull the rest back into a low, loose ponytail. Then take small sections of hair and twist them incorporating it into the ponytail with bobby pins. You can get creative with this option and it’s still easy enough, because the nature of the style is to look

messy.

If you are on the more clean-cut business-y side, a simple bun will do. Just comb you hair back and tight hair into a ponytail. Then, wrap the tail around creating a bun and pin secure. You can lift the front of the style, creating a bump for an edgier, yet classy look (Natalie Portman's look). Or you can just comb your hair back and spray with a fine hold spray to achieve a "best of both worlds" look (Kristen

Stewart's look).

Now, you are wondering how do you get to keep these styles. There are great products here to help! Before getting caught in the rain, spray some

Impermable Anti Humidity Spray from Oribe. It helps keep humidity away, maintaining your original hairstyle or blow out longer and avoiding the frizzy-ness we are all so afraid of.

RUN AWAY WITH ME!!!

With the new film, based on the story about the all girl punk rock band The Runaways, I can't help but notice the punk craze surrounding our neighborhoods. So, for this piece our salon team researched the infamous band, the music...and the look! Fashionably speaking anyone can accomplish a "punky" look by wearing any t-shirt (loose fit, tight fit, flat color or printed, V-neck, scoop or cut-off if you feel like being truer to the genre). Wear the t-shirt with cool skinny jeans and sneakers and you're set! Now, the hair and make-up does not look that simple to accomplish...But it can be!

For those who dare...Joan Jett's 80's punk rock bangs. Start by getting a shag haircut at the salon, and after the bangs start growing out you can trim your bangs by just chopping small pieces of them. The beauty of it, is that they don't have to look perfectly straight! Of course if you want to simplify your life, just come by the salon and we'll trim those for you. Style the bangs with a straightening iron and keep the style by adding a molding product such as Oribe's Creme for Style. For extra shine and lustrous color get a gloss/glaze in a shade darker of your own hair color.
You can play with different tones and shades to create a radical, fun look; and if you are on the blonder side, try going for a golden blonde look like Cherie Currie's hot platinum hair with lot's of hi-lights.

To help you rock the complete Runaway look, Emma has put together step-by-step tips on how to recreate the make up from the movie with a more modern twist (Oh yeah, we got into it!) Kristin Stewart's look (originally rocked by Joan Jett) can be done by applying some navy blue and/or sapphire eyeshadow to eye lids creating the very popular "smokey eye". By using blue eyeshadow instead of plain black, you are giving a more colorful, fun feel, but still accomplishes the darkness needed to get the punk look right. Finish by applying black eye liner to the inside of the bottom water lines, to deepen the eyes and put on some black mascara. For the lips, a nude, pale opaque lip gloss will do the trick. Try Armour lip gloss in Eddie! Dakota Fanning's look demonstrates an edgier, yet girlier look. Use silver eyeshadow all over the top lids and layer them up with some dark gray eyeshadow on the outer crease, kind off going for the smokey eye again. Line the top and bottom of your eyes with eye liner connecting both lines to create a cat eye. Finish by applying a hot pink, or should we say Cherry Bomb lip gloss. Winter Blues

Rather than avoid the blues this winter, why not embrace it. Wearing blue colors on eyes can be mysterious and sultry. Dispite the misconception that wearing blue hues on those peepers might make you look dated, that is certainly not the case with the array of tones, and finishes that are available. From navy, colbolt to turquoise, these colors can be elegantly added subtly or dramaticly - try adding a pop of bright blue liquid liner to top lash line or try rimming eyes in a navy blue pencil, rather then black.

If going out for the the evening, create a smokey eye with a metallic slate blue shadow, and for an airy daytime effect, add a wash of iridescent pale blue to lids.

Pick me up for Winter boredom

Every winter when I get super bored of being bundled up and looking drab, I shop for color.
Since I am not going to bust around town in a hot pink coat, I do it with lipstick.
Wearing bright or bold lipstick in the winter always gives me a pick-me-up. I love hot pinks, bold corals, vibrant reds, and rich oranges. These shades look especially great now when skin tones are at their fairest.

Need a quick pick-me-up for your hair? Every once in awhile it's great to jump start your hair with a good' ole sudsing of some cheap shampoo. You know, the kind you get in a vat at the grocery store that smells like blueberries for $3. I'm not suggesting you buy any but on those occasions that you are visiting family or staying at your boyfriends and it is glaring at you in the corner of the shower, indulge. For your hair it is like a metabolism jolt, compare it to your diet and how every once in awhile some serious junk food is good. Professional shampoos are very moisturizing and nurishing for the hair, even the lightest ones; which is good. But on occassion it is great to use a cheap shampoo. They are chalk full of chemicals (sulfactants and parabens), hence why you shouldn't be making them your every day shampoo, that gives that lather and squekky clean feel. Ultimately this will leave your hair all light and bouncy, but, too much of this will dry your hair out.

I cant stress enough how eyebrows can enhance a face. Nicely groomed and well shaped eyebrows will definitely accentuate features. It can slim down a face, lift and open an aging eye, and overall give you a clean polished look.

Here are a few brow shapes I think are great.

Most would agree that Jennifer Connelly's brows are beyond amazing, and add a lovely contrast against her sparkling green eyes. Not only are these brows eye framing, but they also balance out her long facial shape. The flat shape, and low arch actually help shorten a face shape like hers. Don't be fooled, even though they look naturally "unruly", they aren't. These brows need constant trimming and slight shaping for definition.

This shape is great for Catherine Zeta-Jones, the high arched lengthens her rounded face shape, and instantly lifts her eyes. If her brows were rounded, it would make her face look wider and do nothing for her gorgeous face. Her eyeb rows are also lighten a few shades to add softness to her features. If you find yourself lacking a strong high arched brow, you can always accentuate them by filling them in.

These brows perfectly suit Halle Berry's classic oval face shape. They aren't too heavy, nor too arched. The soft curve of her brows really highlight her beautiful almond shaped eyes. Her natural but polished look, can be a chieved by ad ding a bit of eyebrow wa x, then brushing with a com b to set the hairs in place.

Stained beauty

I recently came across this image of actress Camilla Belle, and couldn't help but fall in love with her makeup . The soft and delicate shades of color are absolutely stunning, and is reminiscent of a pastel painting of Marie Antoinette. Just like the Queen of France, who used berries to stain her lips, Camilla herself looks as if she has been feasting on black berries all day, giving her lips a lovely wash of plum.

Unlike lipstick or glosses, lip stains don't need to be applied as often, which is a great addition to your summer makeup. It doesn't end there, it can also transition beautifully into other seasons, since most stains are flattering all year long.

There are many Lip stains on the market, varying in formula and color- from gels, creams to liquids. Not only are they prefect for lips, but they are great for cheeks too!

Tip: because lip stains can lack moisture, always exfoliate and hydrate lips to ensure an even and perfect application.

The incredible team from Oribe came by this week to give us some product education. They were a fun, and extremely knowledgeable group! We all got a chance to get our "hands dirty". Cristina and I had the Midas Touch when we played with the 24K Gold Pomade in Kate, the Education Director's hair. Steven from Miami helped Danny rock out a sexy do and Tom from Oribe NY and Julian worked some Creme for Style into Peppers beautiful blow out, and I got sex kitten hair courtesy of Pepper, and Rock Hard Gel!

I was so inspired by these two images, of Uma Thurman and Nicole Kidman. I wanted to give Lina a combination look of these stunning styles. I love the soft texture of Kidman's hair and the sculpted glamour of Thurman. I combined these looks for Lina by setting her hair with Phillip B's Jet Set.

"The name of the game is definition". But how do we define a figure with no barriers? In this case our figure is Tori, Tori has broken her barrier... and jumped "head first" into a totally asymmetrical shape. Relying on Oribe's "Curl by Definition" and some subtle diffusing, what is commonly considered a hard look, is infinitely softened. To further polish this crop of locks we applied Oribe's "Creme for Style" all over, even on the shorter exterior to show it's "defined" edge. Just to bookend, the name of the game IS "definition":)

Summer Curls/ Summer Brides

I had a very curly haired client today that brought
some questions to mind regarding product...
She has naturally very curly hair. So I decided to
spray her hair down with water and then added a leave
in conditioner, then I defused it a little and started
to style into a half up. I redefined a few curls with
a skinny curling iron and I thought it was fierce...

She looked great and loved it, but then brought up
humidity (her wedding is in July) so I sprayed her
hair with an anti-humidity hairspray.  That made her
hair look dull so she asked for some shine and I sprayed
some in. In the end it looked nice but I am concerned
about how all those products interact with each other and
if using them together is counter productive.  Please let
me know If I've created a recipe for disaster and what I
can do to avoid it.

Mr. Curl,

The style looks great and you managed her curls well; You are correct in your thinking about products. Since she has time it is important for her to prepare her hair, not only for the the wedding but for the summer. Have her do weekly deep conditioners. She is going to want her hair in tip-top shape, the more moisture her hair can retain naturally the less likely to "frizz".
Curls need support as much as they do moisture. So you will want to give the style some structure with an alcohol based product like a mousse or a light gel. This helps the curl hold its shape. In addition, since you don't want crunchy 80's hair, you need to make sure the moisture is balanced and the curls have shine. In high humidity this calls for an oil based product (if the hair is extremly fine you can do a silicone based serum).

You will want to layer (put one in after another) when the hair is towel dried. Then do your styling, once the curls are dried minimal touching or products should be used.

Oils: Moroccan oil, Alfaparf Semi di lino, Kerastase Oleo Relax
Silicone: Phillip b Antifrizz Formula 57, Sebastian laminates gel, Biosilk Silk Therapy
Alcohol: Sebastian thickify foam, Deva Curl Angell, Vigorol mousse

The Blind Project

I recently had the opportunity to attend the first solo show of my friend Chad Riley. This stunning exhibit of photos was a benefit for The Blind Project. The organization, started by Mr. Riley. and friends Anthony and Liem, raises awareness of sex trafficking in South East Asia. The organization calls attention to this crime through art, media, fashion, and social networks. I was so moved by the images that Mr. Riley captured, he spent the past eight years working beside Anne Liebawitz, and I find it so refreshing of a photographer of such talent to do such beautiful and selfless work. The sale of this series of photographs will be donated to the organization to fund a trip for further research in South East Asia.

Screen Test and the timeless Theo Kogan

Theo Kogan and Rob Roth have done it again, transfixing viewers into an amazing world of music, movement, thought and beauty. The duo created Screen Test, which they have performed several times but was my first opportunity to do the hair. The show is a social commentary with stunning visuals; video projections, costumes and dance choreography that Mr. Roth is known for. The entire performance is set to the elegant yet haunting music of Theo and the Skyscrapers.
To get Theo's look: Her hair is cut in a longer shag, this allows hair to hold the curl better. Hair that is cut to blunt generally has too much weight to hold a curl for an extended period of time. I used a 1" curling iron, curling the hair away from the face. I pinned the hair in the neck area after each curl, this allows hair to cool which makes it last longer. The pins I use are small silver clips found at any beauty/drug store. After curling I sprayed down her hair with Sebastian Shaper Plus hairspray, this holds the shape, is weightless, and has humidity barrier -vital when someone is performing or under extreme heat. Lastly, after taking out all the clips and respraying, I lightly ran my fingers through the curls to softly break them up.
For Theo's makeup Courtney Tinschman applied false lashes and a thick line of liquid black mascara. To finish the look she used Theo's own gloss, yes she has her own cosmetic line too!, in a rich berry red. To learn more about Theo's gloss go to AmourBeauty.

I am really excited about Make Up For Ever's latest approach to selecting the right foundation shade.
Last weekend I was at the NYC studio shooting for a magazine with Katie Pelligrino, one of the Pro-Team artists. Katie is a Senior artist and Event Coordinator...and is a wonderful person to know if you are published makeup artist. She works really hard getting their products out to professionals. Make Up For Ever takes great care of industry professionals and are always thinking of innovative ways to make such a superior product understandable to consumers.
So, whenever I am there I love getting a sneak peek at what they are up to...
Now at Sephora, are images of the correct skin tone to correspond with each foundation shade. Perfect Canvas. People can look at the model's picture and assess how close they are to that skin tone, rather than figuring it out through a bottle. The images look great and the foundation, HD- High Definition is one of the best I've used in years.
Better yet, there are 25 shades!

Beehives! I am so motivated by them lately... (As a kid I was super obsessed with Mrs. Presley)
Fall 2008 Dior and Chanel sported them on the runway. Both versions looked great and I do think that this is a great hairstyle for a special event.
